Tools and Tips

Buy vs. Lease

  • No down payment. Only money due at inception is the first payment, license fee and refundable security deposit.
  • Lower monthly payments. Only pay for the depreciation of the vehicle and interest.
  • New vehicle every three to four years. Shorter terms enable you to get a new vehicle more often.
  • No risk at maturity. Close-ended leases mean that the future value of the vehicle is guaranteed and the customer is only responsible for excessive mileage, wear and tear, and disposition fee at the end of the lease.
  • End of term options:
-Purchase vehicle at the residual value
-You can keep the vehile or sell it if the residual is lower than the
             actual market value
-Finance the balance through a retail installment contract
-Lease extension -- many lenders offer extensions up to six months
-Turn in vehicle and walk away -- only pay a disposition fee
-Turn in vehicle at purchase or lease a new one
-Many lenders offer owner loyalty programs for price and fee reductions

Trade-in vs. Selling Myself
  • Save money. In many states, you pay the sales tax only on the "price difference" as opposed to the full selling price when  you buy without trading. For example, if you buy a car new for $25,000 and you trade in your old car for $8,000, you will pay $1,200 in taxes versus $1,500 if you did not trade in your car.
  • Make it easy on yourself. Selling your car requires significant effort on your part. In order to sell your used car you'll have to do things like running a classified ad, field phone and have strangers come to your house so you can go on test drives with them. Then, of course, you'll have to negotiate!
  • Avoid car repair. If you sell your car, you will need to ensure it is maintained and all parts are working. This is extra worry and expense on your part. It can include fixing brakes, tires and other big items. If you trade-in with a dealership, they cover all of the reconditioning expenses.
  • Protect yourself. Selling your car can be very dangerous and you need to be extremely cautious. When selling on your own, it is extremely important that you set up appointments when a friend or family member can be there with you. This cannot be over-emphasized.
  • Walk away freely. If you trade-in your car, you prevent any issues with a dissatisifed customer later on. What happens if the engine burns up or the transmission goes out? If you sell the car, the new owners knows where you live and may contact you. If you trade-in your vehicle, the dealer assumes all of the responsibility and you can walk away carefree!
